Sciatica - Symptoms and Diagnosis

Sciatic nerve

Sciatic pain is most commonly felt on one side of the body in either leg as mild to sharp pain and occasional bursts of shooting pain through the back of the leg. Pain may be accompanied by paresthesia (pins and needles) and cramping as well as intensified pain during back related activities including simple tasks like standing up from a seated position. Furthermore, muscle weakness along the nerve pathway in the leg and/or weakness in the knee and ankle joints may lead to difficulty walking.

In some cases, the sciatic nerve may be irritated to the point of incontinence, the inability to control/retain bladder and bowel function. This symptom indicates that a group of nerves of the lower spine, the cauda equina, responsible for pelvic organ function, is irritated. As well, tingling and numbing may be experienced in the groin and genitals.

Spinal MRI

Generally, for sciatica and back pain the doctor will perform a series of nerve function tests to isolate the source and area of your pain. You can expect a physical, examining the range of motion of your legs and back noting the movements and areas that cause discomfort. As well, a reflex exam may be administered to determine knee and ankle strength. Further tests such as, X-rays, MRI scans, CT scans and Nerve conduction tests (testing the healthy response of specific nerves), may be requested by your doctor in order to determine the source of pain like trauma or a herniated disc.

How to Order

Once diagnosed, finding relief for sciatica and back pain will include a visit to a chiropractor or physical therapist. Calming the muscle's reaction to the pain and relieving the stress on the nerve is crucial to obtaining relief. Sometimes the treatment includes the use of sound wave technology such as our personal therapeutic ultrasound device. See our treatments section for a comprehensive look at our ultrasound and compression wrap therapies.

Dear MendMeShop,

Thanks so very much for rushing a new adapter for my Ultrasound device. It works perfectly again, and I am excited! Also, it was very kind of you to send a bottle of the Ultrasound Gel, which I can certainly use. I have never dealt with a company that provides the excellent service Mend Me Shop does. Thank you again!! I fell from a ladder onto a cement floor last October and broke my hip--my first broken bone--and was unable to walk for six weeks. My left foot was very swollen and bruised for months afterward. After six weeks, my hip had healed well, and my orthopedic surgeon told me I could walk again. Although I experienced no pain in my hip, there was extreme pain in my heels when I would get up to walk. I apparently banged my feet very hard on the ladder steps when I fell. The orthopedist just shrugged his shoulders and told me there were no broken bones in my foot. He did send me to a podiatrist, who diagnosed inflamed bursae in my heels. He simply told me to wear shoes with a little heel, to purchase some inexpensive heel cups, and said it might take a year or two for my feet to heal. I followed the podiatrist's instructions, which eased the pain very little. I am so thankful I was introduced to the Ultrasound device! I have used it three weeks per Mend Me Shop's instructions and am now taking the fourth week off. My heels are 99% better, and I have almost no pain in them at this time. I am going to continue the treatment for another week or so until I feel certain everything has healed and then plan to use it for some arthritis in my right knee. Thank you, Mend Me Shop, from the depths of my heart (and my husband's too)!
