Hamstring Tendon Injury Causes
Hamstring tendon pain and inflammation is most commonly caused by overuse of the hamstring muscles.
With repetitive use during running and other sports that involve repetitive kicking, jumping, or quick "start/stop" motions, stress is placed on your hamstring muscles causing wear and tear to the tendon fibers that attach the muscles to the bones. When tendonitis occurs over time, it is referred to as chronic tendonitis.
Overloading or overexerting your legs by doing too much too soon, and too quickly can also be a cause. This sudden increase in the intensity or frequency of participation after being inactive for a while makes you susceptible to acute tendonitis. Acute tendonitis refers to and injury to the tendon that causes inflammation quickly.
Biomechanical issues, such as overpronation and leg length discrepancies, which affect the way you walk can put excess stress on the hamstring tendons due to the imbalanced. Other causes that can put excess strain on the hamstring tendons are:
- lack of strengthen in your core muscles (i.e. abdominals and obliques)
- age-related weaknesses and/or degeneration
- strength differences in your hamstring, quadriceps or hip muscles
- lack of exercise and obesity
Improper training techniques (running on hilly or hard surfaces), incorrect form (overstriding in running or lifting too much weight) and old equipment (worn out shoes) will also put you at more risk for injury. Previous injuries that haven't healed properly are a frequent cause of tendonitis and tendinosis.
Hamstring Tendon Treatments
Regardless of the cause of your hamstring injury. You want the pain to stop and to be able to use your hamstring again as soon as possible. It is important to treat hamstring tendon injuries as soon as possible, as any activity or strain you put on your tendon can re-injure it further. Though the pain, discomfort, and inconvenience of a hamstring injury can be overwhelming, it is possible to overcome it.
As your body repairs your tendon it is best that it heal quickly to minimize scar tissue formation - something Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy™ is great at! Even with optimum healing, there is always less elasticity in a previously injured tendon. This can cause the tendon to hurt during exercise and most everyday activities. However, if you heal your injured tendon efficiently and quickly, your chance of re-injury later on is much lower.
Although it is recommended that you rest your hamstring tendons following injury it can be difficult to do as it is an essential tendon for walking and daily activities. Fortunately, there are healing tools that can help treat your tendon and speed up the healing process so you can get back to a life without pain and risk of further injury.
Cold compression therapy and BFST® will reduce pain, swelling and tissue damage, and promote blood flow to heal your medial hamstring (semitendinosus tendon and semimembranosus tendon) tendons faster and more completely than any other methods available.
Cold Compression Therapy - An Ounce of Prevention!
The initial treatment of a hamstring tendon injury or re-injury is cold compression therapy. Treating your tendon inflammation or strain with cold compression therapy as soon as you can is important because it decreases swelling and inflammation. This limits the amount of tissue damage that occurs within the first 72 hours of an acute strain.
When a hamstring tendon strain or tear occurs we think the damage is done at the time of the injury. In reality, the tissue damage continues to occur even after the injury has happened. Yes, at the time of the injury blood vessels are damaged. But after the injury, swelling and inflammation set in and block blood vessels causing further damage. When this happens you may notice a hamstring contusion (hamstring bruising).
Blood contains oxygen that is vital to the survival of your tissue cells. Blocked blood vessels can no longer carry blood to these cells and they begin to break-down, further damaging your injured hamstring tendon. By applying cold compression therapy to a fresh injury or re-injury you reduce tissue damage and reduce the amount of healing that will be required to get your hamstring tendons back to normal.
Aside from preventing tissue damage, cold compression therapy reduces pain by gently numbing nerves in the injured area and providing comforting support to your hamstring tendons and muscles. Initially, you may use pain killers or anti-inflammatory medications but these can affect your organs and should never be used for a long period of time. Cold compression therapy is the natural way to reduce pain in your upper leg quickly.
The Leg/Arm Freezie Wrap® cold compression therapy is an effective and innovative way to treat hamstring tendonitis or tendon strain. The therapy behind the Freezie Wrap® has been doctor recommended for centuries but the Freezie Wrap® itself is a new, safer way to get it!
The cooling gel packs inside the Freezie Wrap® have been designed with ColdCure Technology®. This allows the pack to be supercharged in the fridge, not in the freezer like ice or other freezer packs. This gives you deep cold compression therapy without the risk of 'cold burns' or cryoburn to the layers of your skin. This unique technology, inside a soft and completely adjustable neoprene wrap, gives you comfortable, convenient, and effective cold compression therapy.
Use the Leg/Arm Freezie Wrap® to treat your hamstring after activity and following any re-injury to calm inflammation, treat pain quickly, and stop further tissue damage. The wrap is so versatile you can use it on your arm, foot, calf, and almost everywhere on your body. Have one in your fridge ready when you need it!

Once the initial swelling and severe inflammation of your hamstring injury is under control, you can begin the healing process. Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy™ treatments will drastically improve blood flow to kick start the healing process.
Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy™ - Faster Healing
Once inflammation and swelling have been reduced in your hamstring tendons, nourishing and strengthening the tissue in your upper leg is the goal. Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy™ (BFST®) promotes blood flow to the treatment area bringing the necessary oxygen and nutrients to your tendon fibers. BFST® speeds up the body's natural repair process for faster healing and stronger tissue.
When you rest and stop moving your leg because it hurts, the natural blood flow is reduced. Without proper blood flow, musclar atrophy (shinkage or deterioration of a muscle) can occur as your body's ability to heal itself becomes limited. You need to improve blood flow while giving your hamstring the rest it needs. That's where the Inferno Wrap® comes in.
Not only does the Inferno Wrap® speed your recovery through BFST®, the gentle warming that is produced with the increase in blood flow relaxes your thigh muscles and and whisks away dead cells and toxins that have accumulated from the tendonitis or hamstring tendon injury. This further loosens your muscles and makes your thigh feel better.
Keeping your legs as healthy and strong as possible throughout the healing process will allow you to get back to your regular activities faster. The Leg/Arm Inferno Wrap®, available exclusively from MendMeShop®, provides effective, non-invasive, non-addictive pain relief and healing with no side effects.
The benefits of BFST® do not end once your hamstring stops hurting! Even when your hamstring tendons have healed, your activities can put them at risk of an overuse injury, tendinosis, or another strain. An Inferno Wrap® treatment before activity is an easy way to warm up the muscles and tendons to prepare them for use. Then, end your day with another treatment to prevent tightness from setting in overnight. This incredible healing tool will be the ticket to healthy hamstrings for years to come!
