Ligament tissue connects bone to bone and provides much of the support needed to stabilize joints such as the ankle, shoulder and knee. A sprained knee is one of the most common sports injuries. The entire weight of the body is carried by the knees when walking or running; acting as a hinge between the upper and lower leg bones as well as providing torsion movement for pivoting makes the knee joint one of the most complex joints in the body.

Knee sprains are among the most common sports injuries. Usually this occurs because of an awkward fall or a quick change in direction that exceeds the knees normal range of motion.

Painful sprain

There are four main ligaments in the body, the Anterior Cruciate Ligament(ACL), Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL), Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL). It is possible to damage more than one in a single incident but there are differing treatments for each.

The MCL is one of the more commonly injured ligaments in the body. When the leg is hit from on the outside, such as in football, the knee bends inward and buckles causing the ligament to stretch or tear. Upon injuring your knee, minor stretching or tears may not be noticed until swelling and bruising appear hours later, but more serious tears or full ruptures will make the knee unstable and difficult to walk on. For most people the ligament will heal itself, but depending on the severity of the sprain, surgery may be necessary. Most commonly people experience grade 1 and 2 sprains requiring mild rehab while recovery from a grade 3 sprain or surgery requires intensive and involved physiotherapy.

Treatment for ligament sprains is aimed at reducing inflammation, scar tissue and pain. In the injuries initial stages it is important to reduce the swelling in the area and to control the pain as much as you can. The RICE (Rest Ice Compression Elevation) method has long been a tried and true treatment for sprains. The best way to heal is to reduce swelling and rest the knee, the RICE method facilitates this as well as a quicker healing time. Our cold compression wraps allow you to actively treat yourself using the RICE method.

back wrap to help treat strained back muscles

These wraps are made of the highest quality materials available. They fit perfectly, stay in place, are extremely durable, and use a special patented baffled cold array. What is a baffled cold array? All other cold packs simply use a plastic bag partially filled with cold gel. What is sure to happen is the gel pools in the low spots or in pockets where there is no pressure. Fill a plastic bag with water and put it on your arm and watch what happens - all the water sits in two pools on either side of your arm. The wrap works because they interrupt and slow nerve and cell function in the damaged area. Once blood vessels are damaged they can no longer carry oxygenated blood to the damaged tissue and therefore cells begin to break-down. The deep cold provided by our compression wraps slows cell function thereby reducing cellular break-down. Furthermore, because the cold wraps serve to numb the nerves the wraps also reduce pain!

When treating a sprain it is important for the injured ligaments to fully heal as repeated mild sprains may lead to thickening of the ligaments and irritation of the knee joint. Furthermore, constant re-injury means longer healing time which increases the amount of scar tissue that builds up in your knee. Scar tissue is hard, inflexible, and tough to get rid of. The more scar tissue that develops, the more you lose the range of motion for that knee. The more scar tissue that develops, the more likely you are to have chronic pain or arthritis. Scar tissue means that your leg doesn't perform as well as it once did and it makes it much more prone to injury again later on.

In order to accomplish all of these things, minimize pain, and reduce swelling, limit scar tissue, and increase range of motion for proper rehabilitation ultrasound is the answer! Ultrasound provides deep penetrating heat, up to 3inches deep, to the injured tissues. Adding ultrasound to the proven successful R.I.C.E. method means you are getting the best possible therapeutic healing treatment available to you! When weighing the risk and cost of alternate treatments there is simply no substitute for ultrasound and the U.R.I.C.E. method.
